Push Marketing Verses Pull Marketing Part One

By: Andrew Cocks

There are two kinds of online marketing approaches, push marketing and pull marketing. Determining which to take is critical in cornering the marketing you are targeting. Use the right approach and online salesmanship will become a very easy task. Use the wrong approach and you will potentially lose your prospects forever.

Push marketing refers to the tactic of pushing your product to the prospect, hence the name. When a pizza delivery restaurant uses telemarketing techniques to call up leads and offer them a special discount for pizza orders, that is push marketing. When a salesman approaches you while you are walking down Hollywood Boulevard to sell you some souvenirs, that is push marketing, another example would be an insurance representative knocks on your door and asks for a few minutes of your time so he can introduce his companies latest packages, that is push marketing.

Push marketing is a positive and is often construed as an aggressive act whereby the merchant seeks out and pursues his prospects. He will directly promote and sell his goods, while soliciting a response from the prospect. Immediately you would think that this is bad since we have previously established that online merchants have to contend with the burden of anonymity, aggressively pushing ones product in front of the prospect for him to see.

Admittedly you can understand why this may very well irritate him. Speaking honestly, most people do not think much of door to door salesmen and get mad at their unsolicited attempts to make a sale. It seems that they are wanting your attention, just when you got to sleep, are on the phone , or just plain busy and not in the approachable mood.

How do you feel about telemarketers who speak of offers you do not really like? Do you not lose your cool, especially when they take you away from the final seconds of that very close basketball game, or department store sales people who approach you with a product that is new and they come on too strong with their sales pitch, knowing that they only have seconds to get you to stop and listen.

Indeed, push marketing entails a certain degree of assertiveness. However, having said all that, let us not judge it prematurely. Push marketing can be a very powerful form of advertising and in certain circumstances, push marketing is a necessary means to accomplish some promotional goals. Push marketing exists because it is a vital approach for many marketers.

We first see its negatives, because they are quite apparent, but let us focus on the positive, and sometime essential effects that can provide for your online business. Push marketing is quite direct because it likewise demands direct results. There are some business models that require immediate answers from their prospects, even if such answers turned out to be a no. For these business models, the expedient nature of push marketing is more tailor made for their systems.

This form is the best tactic to use if you want to acquire leads fast. When you push your product towards a prospect, you are demanding a response. This response can be an affirmative answer, a negative answer, or a not now answer. In the event of the latter response, you can transform such a prospect into a lead instead, by say, capturing his email address for follow ups later on.

Push marketing is a great way to introduce a new product or service to the market, and to introduce it quickly. A merchant can not expect to stumble upon his new prospect. He should actively promote a new offering. This is one of the few times when people in general will tolerate push marketing. Oh, his product is new would be the first thought in their minds, thus justifying your aggressive approach.

Another advantage to push marketing will ensure that your brand will remain on the spotlight. You will not have to worry about the buzz on your brand, stagnating. Since you will constantly push your products to the market, they will always be aware of your brands existence. Sadly, before these benefits can be enjoyed, the marketer must first implement the rather aggressive nature of push marketing and such can potentially turn off his prospects.
