Everyone knows that to sell, you need to bring traffic to your site. Naturally then, most online retailers are very focused on getting traffic to their site through the most typical (and successful) means available, e.g., pay per click ads and search engine page rankings. You probably already know that one of the best ways to attract the attention of search engines is to keep your site fresh with useful, relevant content. Great those are all terrific ways to build traffic for your site. But, one of the frequently overlooked techniques is the reverse of adding content to your site, up on the Internet for free use by others. You may already be familiar with article directories. These are huge repositories of content that you can purchase or in some cases, use for free on your site. It is a fast way to add content to your site. The problem is, if the content is free, it may be used by many sites and be less attractive to search engines. On the other hand, if you use the reverse strategy and provide content to article directories related to your products or services, you can increase traffic to your site in two different ways. Linked in Traffic The strategy works in this way. You write an article about your product or service. (You are not writing a promotional piece; the article should be useful such as a how-to or history of the product or information about the general subject area.) You offer that article to an article directory for unrestricted use. As a condition of offering the article, you place a link to your site in the article. When a website looking for content in your subject area chooses your article, it is placed on their website with a link to your website. Now you have another website effectively promoting your website and perhaps, supplying traffic to your website through the link. Search Engine Rankings The article you submitted not only brings you linked traffic directly to your site, but those links help your search engine page rankings as well. Most search engines evaluate the number and quality of links coming into your site. They essentially count each link as a vote of confidence in your site. The more links you have, the more attractive your site is to the search engine. The search engine also evaluates the quality of the links. Links from sites that are relevant to your product rank higher in the rating scale. Presumably, any site that has chosen your article will consider that your content and their site have relevant similarities so those links will count more in your favor. The only negative is that links from sites that are considered negative, such as sites that have engaged in bad practices, can count against you and you do not have much control over that problem, at least initially. However, you can use software to check the incoming links to your site and if you see a link to a site that you prefer not to be associated with, you can certainly write to the webmaster and ask that the link be removed.
