How Does the Mainstream Media Cover Gun News

By: Rob Schmidt

Cheney vs Biden and the Obama Administration became larger when the former VP's daughter, Liz Cheney, accused Vice President Biden of downplaying the threat from Al Qaeda and suggested the Obama administration is not keeping the country safe by being soft on terror. Chicken or egg, Biden told the American public this weekend that another Sept 11th attack is unlikely. Are you crazy! We haven't solved the ease of border crossings but the current administration isn't concerned about another attack - oh brother!
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably seen the news coverage about the Pentagon shooter from last week. The good news is the police officers that protect the facility only suffered minor injuries and the shooter was killed so that our court system will not be clogged with another open and shut case. The shooter was identified as J. Patrick Bedell; an individual with a history of mental illness.
One of the details of the story that doesn't seem to have been covered very well is this shooter was as anti-Bush as you can get and felt that 9/11 was a government conspiracy. This person does seem to have a Amazon account with Bush bashing books
The amount of websites this criminal ranted his anti-Bush feelings across so many websites that is takes up almost 20% of the internet (sarcasm). Here is a particularly poignant rant about the government taking down the towers Via Charles. It was recorded in November 2006 and I'm guessing he had a good day after venting about then President George W. Bush:
"This criminal organization would use its powers to convert military, intelligence, and law enforcement bureaucracies into instruments for political control, and the domination and subjection of society, while discrediting, destroying, and murdering honest individuals within those services, that work to root out corruption, and faithfully serve their fellow citizens. This organization, like so many murderous governments throughout history, would see the sacrifice of thousands of its citizens in an event such as the September 11 attacks, as a small cost in order to perpetuate its barbaric control. This collection of gangsters would find it in their interest to foment conflict and initiate wars throughout the world, in order to divert attention from their misconduct and criminality. The true nature of such a regime would find its clearest expression in the satanic violence currently ongoing in Iraq."
With information like this available all over the internet, do you think the mainstream media covered the details of this person's hatred for the world? While I did see a few news teams cover this sad episode in the context of the deranged individual feeling like America had a secret conspiracy that culminated in destroying the twin towers, most of the news coverage seemed to try to connect the Supreme Court reviewing the second amendment in the case involving Chicago and their ban on guns. Is anyone surprised?
It seems like the mainstream media can't help itself when a story comes up about a shooting. The good news, for them, is the gun news basically has a template already in place so they don't even have to think. Person shoots (insert gun news story name here) and kills (insert number) because right wing, gun toting nuts are allowed to legally buy handguns. Sound about right? It seems like the stories don't offer the positives that people can protect themselves with legal handgun ownership nor the training required to be a responsible gun owner. No, gun news is all about pushing a political agenda and that sure gets tiring. It isn't just gun news that has this tilt but since our website is focused on that subject, we try to review news in that context. In terms of deaths, I guess we shouldn't allow people to drive since that causes more deaths than shootings. We probably shouldn't allow McDonald's to remain in business since heart disease is the leading killer. Taking away those freedoms can wait until "tomorrow" in the media's eyes while the freedoms of the second amendment are dealt with today. Seems like the two options for this type of gun news is to remain silent or to remain vigilant - what is your choice?
